Nepal 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 Topographic Maps. 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. Nepal Survey. We are very excited about these maps finally being available. They are high quality topographic maps produced under contract by the Finnish Survey. The maps are in English and show tremendous detail. The two series are complementary and do not overlap and use the same grid and numbering system. Northern Nepal will be covered at 1:50,000 scale and southern Nepal will be covered at 1:25,000 scale. The eastern 45-50% of the country is now available - see the indexes below. This includes the most famous national parks, such as Sagarmatha (Everest), Langtang, Makalu-Barun, Royal Chitawan, Parsa, and the Lumbini Zone. Coverage of the Lumbini Zone uses a different grid and numbering system (no idea why). The index map shows those quads that are available (shaded in gray). There are 253 sheets at 1:25,000, 34 sheets at 1:50,000 and 65 sheets at 1:25,000 for the Lumbini Zone. We have prepackaged some sheets to cover the most popular areas. These are listed below. The coverage of each set is marked on the accompanying index map.

West Col Productions of the U.K. produces a series of maps that cover the Indian Himalaya, the Nepal Himalaya, and the Karakoram. They also produce maps covering the central high Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and several maps covering mountains in East Africa, Mt. Ararat, and the Caucasus Mountains; you will find these maps listed in their appropriate places. These maps typically lack contour lines, but show ridge lines and peaks with yellow lines. Numerous spot elevations locate the peaks, and rivers and other drainage features are shown in blue. Roads are shown in black and categorized by road surface type. Villages, old mines, and other cultural features are marked. On the reverse of the map, or in a separate booklet is text describing the popular trekking routes, tourist information, diagrams, cross sections, and more. These maps are on better quality paper than the Mandala maps above. The maps are somewhat expensive, but are well worth the price, as they cover areas where little or no other mapping is easily available.

Nepal Travel Maps. 1:50,000. Schneider Maps & Nelles Verlag. These older maps are quite popular for several of the most popular trekking areas. We do recommend the Nepa maps over the Schneider maps, however. The maps show excellent detail with contour lines, roads, trails, and more.

Nepal Himalayan Hiking Maps. 1:250,000. Mandala. These maps are the best for those areas not covered by the Nelles maps listed above. Unfortunately the paper quality is poor in all cases, and we strongly suggest laminating the maps. The Royal Chitwan, Helambu, Annapurna, and Kathmandu city maps are generalized, colored, maps; the others are blue-print copies of topographic maps or planimetric maps with trails overprinted. There is a $10 charge for laminating any of these maps.
