Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1916 voyage with the Endurance is one of the greatest survival adventures of all time. In August of 1914, Shackleton and 27 crew set sail to cross the Antarctic continent on foot. Before reaching the continent the Endurance was trapped in pack ice and slowly crushed. Over the next 20 months Shackleton and the crew managed to survive, culminating in the 800 mile voyage in the 22-foot open lifeboat James Caird to South Georgia Island which led to their rescue. Listed below are some of the best books on the voyage as well as posters printed from original negatives from the voyage.
These posters are reprinted from original photographs and negatives in the British Royal Geographic Society's archives. Printed on off-white heavy-duty poster paper these prints are ideal for framing.

"Long Long Night" Poster. Royal Geographic Society, 2001. The Endurance in this photo looks like a ghost ship, the ice that trapped her adding to the spookiness of the situation. The night is long, very long, nearly four months long, the Antarctic Winter. Hurley's picture is a masterpiece of night-time photography. Size is 80 x 100 cm.

"The End" Poster. Royal Geographic Society, 2001. "Pressure Ridge" Poster. It portrays the trapped Endurance as seen from behind a pressure ridge that developed nearby.
"South With Endurance." By Frank Hurley. Bloomsbury Pub. Ltd., 2004. The story of Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917 is so amazing that without Frank Hurley's photos we probably wouldn't believe it! The Endurance was trapped for months and then finally crushed by the ice and left the crew stranded on the ice floes of the Weddell Sea. Shackleton managed to reach Elephant Island and from there sailed through one of the roughest pieces of sea to get to South Georgia on a small boat. He succeeded and managed to organise a rescue team to go and pick up the men that had stayed on Elephant Island. It was an incredibile feat.
It is extremely remarkable that we can actually see these photos today. There must have been many occasions during their struggle when the crew could have destroyed the glass plates and film that added to the weight of the sledges they needed to haul. The negatives reside at the Royal Geographical Society and are still capable of reproducing beautiful prints.
Even for those fully acquainted with the details of the Endurance expedition, this book will renew the awe such an incredible story inspires. Paperback.

South: The Endurance Expedition. Ernest Shackleton. Penguin Books, 2004. In 1914 veteran explorer Ernest Shackleton set out to become the first to traverse the entire Antarctic continent. "To the Ends of the Earth" book. Bloomsbury Pub. Ltd., 2005. A magnificent celebration of 175 years of the Royal Geographical Society, from the early expeditions of Livingstone and Stanley in Africa, Younghusband in Tibet and Freya Stark in the Middle East, to the postwar achievements of Hunt and Hillary on Everest.
This superb book assembles a stunning visual record - including maps, original documents and artifacts, as well as more than 400 photographs (the majority in full colour) - that the RGS and those it has sponsored have gathered throughout its history. The quality and breadth of coverage make this a spectacular record of events and an unrivalled resource which is not only fascinating to read but breathtaking to look at.
Emphasising the human dimension of the RGS's work, the book is a tribute to the determination and sense of purpose of those whose life and work have been closely associated with the Society.
